About Shaun

Shaun trained as a Dental Hygienist in 1993 whilst serving with the Royal Army Dental Corps at their school in Aldershot and left the Army in 1999. He started work in general dental practice working in Alfreton and the surrounding areas. He moved to various practices in Nottingham and continues to work across three practices full time.

In 2003, Shaun was accepted for the GDC Fitness to Practice Panel to sit on the various Conduct Committees of the Council. This work was rewarding as well as enlightening as it was apparent that many of the registrants that were placed in front of the Committees could have avoided this ordeal by ensuring that they complied with GDC requirements. This has subsequently allowed Shaun to pursue an interest in Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance.

As a consequence, Shaun left the Committee to join Dental Protection Limited as a DCP Local Dental Adviser where he helps professionals caught up in problems, deal with situations so that they may well avoid a GDC hearing. He has successfully completed the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) Certificate in Dental Practice Appraisal, which he utilises not only in his day to day work, but also to help practitioners facing investigation.

Shaun has been co-opted onto Nottinghamshire Local Dental Committee and works with this Committee to work for the GDPs of Nottinghamshire. Indeed, Shaun was tasked by the Committee to start work on a Practitioner Advisory Support Scheme (PASS) where practitioners can seek support and mentorship at an early stage to prevent GDC investigation. Shaun has attended the last two LDC Annual Conferences on behalf of the constituents of Nottinghamshire.

He began professional speaking in 2005 by speaking to regional groups of the (then) British Dental Hygienist Association and this has culminated in being asked by Dental Protection to now speak on their behalf to DCP groups that request a speaker. Shaun was also a key speaker at the Dentistry Show 2010 and he is a Key Opinion Leader for Philips Sonicare and will be speaking on behalf of Philips later in 2010. He continues to be a moderator and speaker for Hygienist.co.uk an online forum for Dental Hygienists and has contributed articles for 'Team in Practice' the FGDP's Journal for Dental Care Professionals.
